Southdown Rovers entered 2 teams (Claret & Blue) into the Willingdon 6-a-side tournament on Saturday 24th July. Drawn in separate groups, both sides faced stiff competition against the likes of Crawley Panthers, Eastbourne, AS Eastbourne and Hove Rovervale. The clarets got off to a flyer by beating Crawley Panthers 1-0 and Southwick 3-0, which was followed by 3 consecutive 0-0 draws, despite being the better side in all 3 games. It was a tight group with 3 sides finishing on 9 points, however the Clarets made it through to the semi final on goal difference which is more than they deserved having not conceded a goal in any of their matches.
In the other group the Blues also played brilliantly, winning 3 and drawing twice, which included a well fought victory against the tournament favourites, AS Eastbourne. This meant qualification for the semi final as group winners against…. Southdown Rovers Clarets!
In a tense match, the Clarets took the lead with a poachers goal from Billy McInerney after a shot from William Browne was parried by Leo Alfieri. However, shortly afterwards, Will Varley struck a sumptuous pile-driver into the bottom left corner to equalise and send the game into penalties. Unfortunately for the Blues, it wasn’t to be and the Clarets triumphed 4-3 to set up a final against AS Eastbourne.
In another tight game, AS Eastbourne dominated possession, however were unable to break through the resolute Clarets defence. Harry Goatcher was as dogged as ever in midfield and Sam Fernley went close following a great run, however the AS Eastbourne keeper pulled off a great save to deny what would have been a certain victory in the final minutes. After a pulsating 10 minutes neither side managed to score, so the referee signalled penalties. Nerves were certainly a factor in a thrilling penalty competition, and with the scores locked at 4-4, the AS Eastbourne keeper pulled off yet another fine save and the seasiders went on to take victory after their fifth penalty was converted.
Whilst it was a shame not to leave Willingdon as winners, both Southdown sides were excellent on the day and it was further proof that this under 15 (soon to be under 16) side will be a force to reckoned with next season. The only goals conceded in a combined 13 matches were against each other in the semi final. Well done everyone!
